SMSF's Grants Presentation

The San Marino Schools Foundation (SMSF) presented grant awards of over $2 million to the San Marino Unified School District (SMUSD) at the May 22, 2018, SMUSD School Board meeting.

The first part of the grant will go to directly fund 21 full time teaching positions across all four San Marino schools, while the second part of the grant is for advancing enrichment programs in the District.

The breakdown of the $2.14 million grant is as follows:

  1. $2 million for 21 full-time teachers across all four school sites: four at Carver Elementary, four at Valentine elementary, five at Huntington Middle School, and eight at San Marino High School.
  2. $97,000 for the District’s Wellness Initiative Proposal: this grant will fund the entirety of the proposed budget for this project. This initiative aims to address the social and emotional needs of students at all four schools.
  3. $19,450 for Mindfulness programs: running parallel to the Wellness Initiative, this grant covers mindfulness resources, programs, and instruction at Huntington Middle School.
  4. $10,000 for additional wellness programs: supports programming at all four school sites to support the efforts of coordinators to instill emotional and social well-being.
  5. $8,415 for First Lego League Program: funds supplies for the Lego League program, a STEM program that is offered at both elementary schools
  6. $7,000 for CalTech Cooperative: this will go directly to funding travel for students participating in the STEM CalTech program next year.

In attendance for the grant presentation were SMSF Trustees Michael Killackey, Richard Lord, Larry Yang, Mark Yee, Boren Chen, Jennifer Chuang, Tina Siu, Michiko Lee, Sabrina Kong, and SMSF Interim Executive Director James Lau. In addition to the high SMSF Trustee attendance, Chinese Club President Alan Chen, Chinese Club members Shawn Chou, John Chou, Maggie Li, and Johnson Shyong were also present. To accept the grants on behalf of the District were SMUSD School Board President Shelley Ryan and SMUSD Superintendent Dr. Alex Cherniss.

Without the generous donations from the Foundation’s supporters, none of this would be possible. Thank you for the continued support in making the San Marino Unified School District great.
